Have you ever thought that maybe increasing body confidence is less about changing the way our body looks and more about the thoughts and relationship with have with ourselves?
Culture tells us that body confidence is found by improving our looks (e.g. losing weight, becoming more fit and toned, having youthful hair & skin, or let’s face it, all of the above) but trust me, none of these things will ever be “enough” unless our inner world (thoughts, feelings and emotions) are rooted in what truly gives confidence, which is the acknowledgement that we are inherently worthy, beyond the shape, form and weight of our bodies.
Now, before you decide this post is not for you, please hear me me out :)
I would like to avoid any confusions: this is not to suggest that we are to neglect how our body looks.
Because our bodies are our vehicles for going through life, I do believe it’s important to take good care of them. However, there is a major difference between taking care of ourselves and our bodies and depending on them looking flawless and polished at all times in order to feel worthy as a person.
Like most things in life, it’s about balance.
So today, I want to share with you, a 5-step exercise we can do to increase body confidence without having to change a thing about how our body looks on the inside but instead focus on cultivating a mindset that fosters inner peace and more body acceptance:
Step # 1: Think about 1 part of your body or a physical trait that you often find yourself fixated on or are dissatisfied with. Try your best to isolate 1 think and resist thinking all is wrong (trust me, it isn’t).
Step # 2: Write down the 3 thoughts that first come to mind when you think about this area or body part. No one’s looking at your paper, so do your best to be honest with yourself.
Step # 3: Have a look at those 3 thoughts, and ask yourself:·
Is this true?·
Is this accurate?·
Is this kind?
Step # 4: Ask yourself how do you rather think about this part of you? (and write it down)If given the choice (which is what you’re giving yourself right now) would you really think that way or would you rather think a different way?
Step #5: Practice your new thoughts.Because this is a body area that you often think about and focus on, this presents you with the opportunity to get lots of practice. Instead of defaulting to the same thoughts you often have (see step # 2) take the invitation to entertain the thoughts you rather have about your body (see step #4).
It take time but practice makes “perfect.
Increasing body acceptance and building a healthier body image is a journey that for most of us requires developing new skills, new ways of thinking and lots of practice but is completely possible.I invite you to sit down with your journal and try the exercise.
In my new program, Nourished & Grounded, I would guide you through an in-depth process of building body acceptance and a healthier relationship with food, all the while taking amazing good care of your health.
